Celebrating the 98th Birth Anniversary of the First Female Prime minister Of India.Indira PrIyadarshini Gandhi was born on 19th November 1917 in Allahabad. She was elected the President of the Indian National Congress after her father, Jawaharlal Nehru’s death, and later elected as the Prime minister of India after Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death.
In 1971 when many East Pakistani people fled to India to escape the violence inflicted upon them by the Pakistani Army, she met the Pakistani Prime Minister for a weeklong Summit which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. She led a movement called as the “Green revolution” to bring about agricultural reforms to help the sick and poor Sikh farmers of Punjab.
In 1977 she declared emergency and is known to have regretted later. She died on 31st October 1984.
India along with many other countries has issued stamps depicting Indira Gandhi. India has issued Commemorative and Definitive stamps depicting Indira Gandhi. These stamps are of various denominations.
Many other countries including East Germany, Argentina, Russia, Fujeira, Burundi etc have also issued stamps depicting Indira Gandhi.
