New Lithuanian Coins Celebrate Physics Day

2018-06-01 Fri

Lithuania released a new 1.5 Euros collector coin celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Vilnius University Physical Days. Designed by Dinas Zauras, the coin’s obverse features a dinosaur whose forehead depicts a symbol of the 50th anniversary of the Physical Days of Vilnius University. An image of Vytis is placed near the emblem of state. Other inscriptions include “LITHUANIA”, 2018, 1.50 euros, and the logo of UAB Lithuanian Mint.

A student physicist with a dinosaur truck is featured on the reverse. The frosted figures are designed in such a way that it creates an illusionary effect to portray movement of the circle. A miniature rendition of Vilnius University shows philologists waiting for the Faculty of Philology. Other inscriptions on the reverse include “VILNIUS UNIVERSITY” and “FiDi 50”.

Physics Day started in 1969. Physicists, followers and students and alumni from the Faculty of physics organise a demonstration every April in Vilnius since 1972. They carry flags and a huge dinosaur leads the demonstration. They walk towards the Faculty of Philology to meet ladies of poetry and fiction.

That funny demonstration denotes that physicists are a part of the most active and creative academic community. Several events are organised in the fields outside the faculty building called Fizland or the Land of Physics. Students and researchers display various forms of interesting physical phenomena here.

Many students, in fact, take up the course because they can be a part of this event. The fun show tells us that Physics is not only about boring formulas but also about various interesting experiments and theories. Innovations displayed at the event are even sold. Many of these students now own high-tech companies.
