The Kushan Empire was one of the most powerful and culturally influential empires of ancient Central Asia and northern India. It flourished roughly from the 1st to the 3rd century CE, connecting the regions of present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, northern India, and parts of Central Asia.

The empire reached its greatest height under King Kanishka I. His vast domain stretched from the Oxus River (Amu Darya) in Central Asia to the Ganges basin in India, including major cities such as Peshawar, Mathura, Taxila and Begram.

Kanishka I, the most celebrated ruler of the Kushan Empire, issued one of the most varied and historically important coinages of the ancient world. His coins reflect the empire’s peak prosperity, its control of Silk Road trade routes, and a remarkable religious and cultural syncretism that blended Iranian, Greek, and Indian traditions.

He continued the bimetallic system established by his father, Vima Kadphises. Gold coins circulated widely for high-value trade, while copper served everyday local use. Multiple mints operated, with the main gold mint likely at Bactria, northern Afghanistan, Gandhara, Kashmir, and possibly elsewhere.

Almost all coins shows a uniform royal portrait on the obverse, where Kanishka stands facing, with his head turned to the left; wears a long Central Asian-style coat (caftan), trousers, and boots; Flames often rise from his shoulders; In his left hand he holds a spear or standard; with his right hand he sacrifices at a small fire altar; a royal Tamgha. The reverse has more than 20-30 different deities appear such as Shiva (Oesho), Buddha, Maitreya, and Greek gods.

Here, copper coin weighs 8.64 gram. The obverse depicts king stands facing left, clad in typical Central Asian attire, offering at a fire altar. A Greek legend runs around the design. The reverse features goddess Nanaia [Mesopotamian goddess of love, fertility, and war] stands facing right, holding a cornucopia. A royal tamgha appears in front of her, with the Greek legend “Nanaia” on the left.
