Gold Dinar of Ibrahim Shah

2018-05-25 Fri

The Jaunpur Sultanate attained its greatest height under the younger brother of Mubarak Shah, who ruled as Shams Al-Din Ibrahim Shah (1402-1440). He proved to be the greatest ruler of the Sharqi dynasty under whom Jaunpur became the important centre of learning. To the east, his kingdom extended to Bihar and to the west to Kanauj. He even marched on Delhi at one point.

During his reign, he issued coins in all the four metals: gold, silver, copper, and billon.

The above shown gold Dinar which weighs around 11.31g was issued by him. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with Arabic legend “al-Sultan al-'Azam Shams al-Dunyawa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar Ibrahim Shah Sultani Khulidat Mamalkatahu” and the reverse of the coin inscribed as “Fi Zaman al-Imam Nayab Amir al-Mumineen Abu al-Fatah Khulidat Khilafatahu” with the date in words in the margins.
