Mirza Nuruddin Beig Mohammed Khan Salim was known in history by his imperial name Salim or Jahangir. He was the fourth Mughal emperor who ruled between 1605 – 1627 CE. Among all the Mughal Emperors he was undoubtedly the greatest patron of fine arts. He took a great interest in it.

Jahangir introduced several coin designs. He was the first Mughal Emperor in India who minted coins with his wife Nurjahan’s name inscribed on them. He issued gold and silver coins featuring 46 varieties of poetic legends.

Jahangir brought out an unusual and exclusive type of gold and silver coins bearing the zodiac signs. These coins are remarkable in their execution & fabric. They are now very few in numbers, as his successor, Shah Jahan withdrew them and melted most of them.

He issued attractive series of coins in silver representing the twelve months, minted at Patna/Delhi/Agra/Lahore etc. These coins are extremely rare in sets. The obverse of these coins is inscribed with ‘Noor-ud-din Jahangir Ibne Akbar Badshah’ and the reverse is inscribed with the name of Persian months: Farvardin, Ardibehisht, Khurdad, Tir, Amardad, Shehrewar, Mihr, Aban, Azar, Di, Bahhman, and Isfandarmuz with the AH date.
