Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

2017-07-05 Wed

Elizabeth II has won all of our hearts and is the longest reigning queen of England till date while Prince Philip's bold humour has made us laugh. It’s been 70 years since the most loved royal couple got married on 20th November 1947 but the love in their eyes is still the same!

Royal Mail issued this commemorative miniature stamp sheet of beautiful life moments of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip during their 60 years of marriage till 2007 on 16th October 2007. The first 1st Class stamp on the left-hand side is a picture of the Royal Family at Balmoral (1972) while the second 1st class stamp depicts The Queen and Prince at Buckingham Palace by Lord Snowdon (2007). The 69 Pence stamp is the entire family at Windsor Castle (1965) and the 78 Pence stamp portrays Queen and Prince Philip with Prince Charles and Princess Anne at Balmoral (1953).

The Queen and Prince were third cousins. Having had a very troublesome childhood, Philip was an outlier with a decidedly unconventional background and very little money. He had an abundance of love to give away but it was locked deep down; Elizabeth or his Lilibet unlocked it! He was originally a Prince of Greece but gave up everything for Elizabeth II. Though they had met twice before, Philip first liked Elizabeth II when she performed in the “Aladdin” pantomime. She already liked him from the first time they met.

When Philip returned to London in 1946, he often visited Buckingham Palace and joined Elizabeth II and Margaret, her younger sister for dinner. They had a lot of fun in those times playing ball and tearing around the long corridors. Late in the summer of 1946, Philip proposed to Elizabeth, and she accepted on the spot, without even consulting her parents. Her father consented on the condition that they keep their engagement a secret until it could be announced after her 21st birthday, the following April. Like the princess, Philip didn’t believe in public displays of affection, which made it easy to mask his feelings.

The long-delayed engagement announce finally came on 9th July 1947 and they were married 4 months later. They are still very much in love and the whole world is proof of that!

Mintage World is proud to present a stamp set of eternal love stories depicted on stamps like Orpheus and Eurydice, Eros and Psyche, Napoleon and Josephine and Paris and Helen. Read on!
