Another stunning piece of ancient Indian numismatic history has come to light, a copper coin of Chandragupta II (r. c. 375–415 CE). It weighs 1.32 grams. It is in the extremely fine condition and exceptionally rare in this grade. Guptas mainly issued coins in three metals, i.e., Gold, Silver, and Lead. Copper coins of Guptas are extremely and lower/higher denomination coin with bust/portrait is exceedingly rare.
This coin exemplifies the artistic excellence of Gupta minting. The coin shows the realistic portraiture combined with powerful symbolism. Copper issues like this are far scarcer in high grade than their gold dinaras, making this an outstanding collector’s piece.
The obverse depicts beautifully detailed bust of the king facing left, adorned with a long earring and an ornate crown. It is truly a striking portrait capturing the majesty of one of India’s greatest emperors.
The reverse features Garuda standing facing front with the Brahmi legend “Chandra Gupta” inscribed below. The Garuda is an iconic emblem of the Gupta dynasty and vehicle of Lord Vishnu.
The condition of 1600 years old coin is extremely fine and has sharp details on both sides.
