Malwa Sultan Ghiyath Shah's Silver One-Eighth Tanka
2025-11-03 Mon
Ghiyath Shah was the ruler of the Malwa Sultanate. The son of Mahmud Khalji I, he had already governed the kingdom as heir apparent (w?l? ?ahd) from 1456 to 1469, enjoying the rare privilege of striking coins in his own name. The earliest known issue, a copper falus, bears the Hijri date 861 (1456–57 CE) and the legend “Wali Ahad”.After his formal accession in 1469, Ghiyath Shah minted gold, silver, and copper coins in a dazzling variety of designs. Among them is this silver one-eighth tanka (wt. 1.3 g). The obverse of the coin is inscribed as Ghiyath Shah Bin Mahmud Shah Khalji, and the reverse of the coin is inscribed as AL-Kibriya Lillah.
