After the death of Akbar in the year 1605, his son Jahangir sat on the Mughal throne. But his formal coronation took place after several months. After sitting on the Mughal throne, he ordered that no coins will be issued with his name till he is crowned at Delhi.

Jahangir was the fourth Mughal emperor who ruled India for almost 22 years from 1605 to 1627. The real name of Jahangir was Nur-ud-din Muhammad Salim. He took the title Nur-ud-din Muhammad Jahangir Badshah Ghazi after sitting on the throne. He showed a keen interest in art and architecture. He also encouraged many artists during his time and played an important role in the development of Mughal art and architecture. He is also known for his architecture works; the most famous work undertaken during his reign being the exquisite Shalimar Gardens in Kashmir.

This gold heavy mohur of Jahangir weighs around 13.6g. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Shah Nur-ud-Din Jahangir ibn Akbar Badshah’ with regnal year 4. The reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Sikka Zad Dar Shahr Agra Khusru Giti Pahan’ with Hijri Year 1017.
