Gahadavala’s coin sold for INR 8500

Gahadavala dynasty ruled over the region of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar from 11th and 12th Century CE.Their capital was at Kannauj, so they were popularly known as Gahadavala of Kannauj.The founder of the Gahadaval dynasty was Chandradev. He took the advantage of the disintegration of the Kalachuri dynasty and laid the foundation of their kingdom. Govindachandra was the grandson of Chandradeva who fought with the Palas and gave a tough battle to Ghaznavid. They also issued coins which were similar to the Kalachuris.
The given gold coin was issued by Govinda Chandra (1114- 1154 CE). It weighs around 4.23 grams. The obverse depicts Goddess Lakshmi seated facing front. The reverse has a Nagari legend ‘Srimad Govindchandra Deva’. This coin was sold for INR 8500 in the Todywalla Auctions which took place on 16th Sep 2017 in Mumbai.
