We are very familiar with round-shaped coins! Very few of us must have seen quirky-shaped coins. But ancient India was way too ahead than our imagination. They liked innovating with new ideas and issued few unique coins.What do you think of the image shown alongside?
Yes, it is a ‘U’ shaped coin, issued by Shilahara dynasty who ruled in the region of Maharashtra (c.800 to 1300 CE). It is a uniface coin depicting two Kannada letters ‘Shri’ and Garuda running to the right at the bottom. This dynasty is popularly known for issuing this type of gold coins. They also issued round shaped coins in gold, silver, and copper.
