2017-09-28 Thu
Eastern Ganga was a medieval Indian dynasty (11th to 15 Century CE) who ruled over the regions of Orissa, West Bengal, Andra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The most popular architectural marvel, Konark Sun temple was built by this dynasty.Konark simply means ‘Sun of the corners’. It is featured in the list of Seven Wonders of India. Konark temple was initially built on the sea bank but now the sea has receded and the temple is a little away from the beach. This temple was also known as 'BLACK PAGODA' due to its dark colour and used as a navigational landmark by ancient sailors to Orissa.
Eastern Gangas also issued coins and they have regnal dates instead of the ruler’s name. The coins issued by them are all gold and have a bull on the obverse while the reverse has Kannada letters and numerals. The coins are simple but very attractive.
