2017-09-14 Thu
Rastrakutas was an Indian royal dynasty, which ruled the major part of Indian peninsula from 6th to 10th century CE. The coinage of Rastrakutas remained an enigma for historians and numismatists but yet the inscriptions of Rastrakuta mentions the denominations like Dramma, Suvarna, Gadyana, Kalanju, Kasu, Manjadi and Akkam.Recently major archaeological activities and findings have reported gold and copper Rastrakutas coins. Last year a Gold Gadyana coin of Rastrakutas was auctioned for 4, 50,000 INR by Classical Numismatic Gallery in Mumbai.
The obverse of this coin depicts a tail curled lion with a raised front paw within a dotted border. The reverse of this coin depicts a Two-line legend in Hale-Kannada which reads “Sri Na nni/ ve dem ga” within the dotted border. This legend is attributed to Govinda IV, he was entitled as ‘Sri Nanni Vedemga’.
