2017-09-04 Mon
An exhibition has been organised by the Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) and Association of Singapore Philatelists celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first postage stamps released by the Singapore post office. The exhibition began on 1st September and showcases the first stamps issued in Singapore that were released in 1867.An envelope cover that used provisional stamps on 1st Sept 1867 is also showcased. Singapore used Indian Stamps under British Indian rule in the beginning. It became a Crown colony in April 1867 and started printing its own stamps. The new stamps had values denoted in Straits currency instead of Indian currency.
Over 2,000 artefacts like postal stationery, revenue stamps, and postcards are also showcased. The organisers stated that this exhibition shares a lot of information about Singapore's postal history. It talks about how the postal system helped in developing the economic and social life of Singapore in the 19th century.
A new limited edition commemorative stamp issue on the same theme was also launched depicting an image of Queen Victoria. The exhibition will go on until 1st January 2018.
