Highlights of Madurai Coin and Stamp Exhibition

A coin exhibition was conducted by Madurai Philatelists and Numismatists Association at Gandhi Museum in Madurai on Sunday where many interesting coins were displayed. Young students had come in large numbers while prominent numismatists and philatelists explained the historical significance of the collectibles.Highlights include a small bronze coin with a hole in the middle issued by England during Second World War between 1942 and 1944. England issued these coins to save metal for its armory.
A collector had displayed gold coins issued in 1010 CE when emperor Raja Raja Chola-I built the famous Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur. He had also showcased a 1000 rupees coin that celebrates the millennium celebration of the temple.
Rare commemorative coins celebrating freedom fighters like 150 Rs coin of Tagore, 100 rupees coin of Anna Durai and 100 rupees coin issued for the 75th anniversary of Dandi March, were also displayed.
Other interesting coins from the Mughal period, pre-Independence era, circulated coins and commemorative coins were also showcased.
The exhibition closes today and the association is trying its best to promote the hobbies of stamp collection and coin collection among the youth.
