2017-08-24 Thu
India has a large number of beautiful lakes and great rivers spread all over the country from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari.Kashmir is blessed with the exotic natural beauty of landscape and water bodies, out of them one of the best is Dal Lake. Dal Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in India and is the second largest in the Jammu & Kashmir Valley.
In ancient text Dal is mentioned as Mahasarit, ancient history records mention that village named Isabar to the east of Dal was the residence of Goddess Maa Durga. During the Mughal period, the Mughal rulers of India designated Kashmir, Srinagar in particular, as their summer resort. They developed the precincts of the Dal in Srinagar with sprawling Mughal-type gardens and pavilions as pleasure resorts to enjoy the salubrious cool climate. Some of these examples are Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashme Shahi etc.
The sparkling quiet waters of the Dal surrounded by the snow capped mountains on its three sides undoubtedly marks it as one of the most beautiful lakes in India. Apart from the natural beauty, Dal Lake attractions are the floating gardens, colourful shikaras & house boats.
India Post has issued Commemorative and definitive stamps depicting Beautiful Shikara on Dal Lake. These stamps are of various denominations.
