Akbar’s Delhi Mint

Indian capital city Delhi has a long history. It has been an important political center of India. It was the principal mint of Mughals. Mughal Emperor issued coins from this mint in all the three metals. Silver coins of Akbar were issued from this mint with the mint epithet ‘Hazrat’ from AH 963 to AH 985. Copper coins were also issued from this mint from AH 964 to AH 991, and gold was issued from this mint from 972 to 979. Later mint epithet from the coin dropped when he issued coins with ilahi dates.This silver rupee which weighs around 11.3g was minted in Delhi during the 40th year of his reign, during the month Mihir. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Allahu Akbar Jale Jallaluhu’. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Ilahi date 40 ilahi, at the top and mah Mihir at the bottom.
