1854-D Coronet, Large D Half Eagle Offered for an Affordable Price

On 21st July, Scotsman Auction Co. Offered several interesting coins during Missouri Numismatic Society’s 57th Annual Coin Festival at the Saint Charles Convention Centre in Saint Louis. An 1854-D Coronet, Large D gold $5 half eagle, graded Fine 12, was sold for $1,265.< br> 56,413 such coins were produced at the Dahlonega Mint in Georgia in two varieties of mint marks, Large D and Medium D. Some of them have Mint marks, but the offered coin has bold Large D.
< br> The otherwise well-worn type has a mustard gold surface, bold outlines and ashy grey accents in the recesses.
< br> Branch Mint gold coins of this time period, in lower grades, have improper cleaning and scratches. There is evidence that many of them also were salvaged from shipwrecks. The offered coin was sold for $1,265, which is a reasonable amount for any collector.
