Unique yet Affordable Uniface 1831 Matron Head Error Cent
2017-08-09 Wed
An 1831 Matron Head, Medium Letters uniface error cent, graded Very Fine 35, with a normal obverse and a blank reverse was sold only for $1,000. Two planchets were inserted into the coining press at the same time, resulting in two uniface errors, one with a blank obverse and normal reverse face, and the other with a blank reverse and a normal obverse. The reverse has incused regions on the other side of the raised areas on the obverse, like a depression at the centre opposite the portrait of Liberty.
Experts state that the obverse was used for the Newcomb 2 and Newcomb 3 die marriages, both Medium Letters varieties. Due to the absence of reverse design, the exact variety cannot be found out. The offered coin has slight corrosion on the dappled brown and steel surfaces. Given the uniqueness of the coin, it is affordable for collectors.
