Banknotes as Works of Art

2017-08-08 Tue

The Paddle8 online auction offered currency used as works of art, prints, drawings, and mixed media. On 24th July, items like “currency” by Andy Warhol, photographer David LaChapelle, and the anonymous British graffiti artist called Banksy were auctioned.

Banksy designed a counterfeit £10 note from the “Banksy of England” which looks like a real £10 note of the Bank of England. Only the name of the bank is different and it features a portrait of Princess Diana instead of Queen Elizabeth II.

The LaChapelle created a One Dollar Bill Used as Negative, 1990-2008. The artist experimented with using money instead of negatives. The colourful print looks like a work of Pop art.

An offset lithograph of a sheet of S&H Green Stamps was created by Warhol. A real Bicentennial era $2 bill with a 13-cent stamp and Garden Grove, California, cancellation, signed by Warhol was also auctioned. “Art Cash” bills, printed by the American Banknote Co were used in an “Experiments in Art and Technology” benefit at a December 1971 private casino party at Automation House in New York City. Robert Whitman, Robert Rauschenberg, Tom Gormley, Red Grooms and Marisol also added notes for the set.
