2017-08-03 Thu
Chandellas of Jejakabhukti ruled from 9th century to 13th century in the central region of India. They were the feudatories of the Gurjara-Pratiharas of Kannauj.Talking about their coinage not many varieties are seen. So far we have come across a very common series depicting a seated goddess Lakshmi on obverse and Nagari legend on reverse. There are other few varieties than these too.
The given coin in the image belongs to the Madanavarma Deva (CE. 1128 to 1165).
This Gold Masha weighs around 0.9 grams. The obverse has a seated goddess, Lakshmi. While the reverse bears Devanagari legend, ‘Shri Madana Varman Deva ‘.
The mesmerizing Khajuraho groups of temples in Madhya Paresh were built by this dynasty!
