Postal Stamps from a Country Devoid Postal Service
2017-08-03 Thu
56 original postage stamps were created by U of M graphic design graduate Kaamil Haider for Somalia. His exhibit was called “Stamps of Somalia: Illuminating a Nation”. The designs depicted Somali national monuments, its alphabet, and its animals. The irony is that Somalia doesn’t have a postal service today. The civil war in the country destroyed the postal service in the country completely. The stamp designs are not only a vision for the country but also celebrate the country’s rich history and culture. Haider believes that stamps unify the nation and are a representation of the country in the eyes of the world. He also believes that art and design are a crucial part of rebuilding Somalia on a common ground and each one of them will have to come together for shaping the country’s future.
