Tipu Sultan Gold Pagoda Sold for INR 85,000

Tipu Sultan was a ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore; he is as also known as Sher-e-Mysore, (Tiger of Mysore). He was the eldest son of Sultan Hyder Ali of Mysore. Born on 20th November 1750, Tipu Sultan, a great scholar, poet, and soldier, ruled the Kingdom of Mysore with his father until the latter’s death in 1782.This gold Pagoda minted in Dharwar was issued by Tipu Sultan in the Mauludi year 1216, during the 6th year of his reign. The weight of the coin is around 3.4g. On the obverse, coin reads as ‘He’ with the regnal year 6; and mint name Dharwar written below within a double line circle with a row of dots. On the reverse side, the coin reads as ‘Huwa Muhammad As-Sultan, Al-Adil Sanah 1216.
This very rare gold coin was sold for INR 85,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 2nd December 2012.
