Chakan is village about 30 kms from Pune, which was a fort. One Abyssinian ruler fortified the fort by the end of 13th century, indicates it was older and existing before. Grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was around the end of 16th Century. It changed hands during Mughal period and was for a short time named Mominabad.
During the period of Peshwa rule, coins in the denomination of silver Rupee and Half rupee are known to be minted from Mominabad Urf Chakan mint with distinct Maratha Mark of Devanagari 'SHRI'. The above coin in particular has an extra punch of "SHRI" beside the regular SHRI
