Gold Mohur of Manipur
2017-07-21 Fri
The kingdom of Manipur or Kangleipak was a princely state during the British Raj which shared its borders with the Assam province and British Burma. It is said that Manipur has a long history and they have an accurate record of their kings. This gold mohur was issued by the king Gaura Simha of Manipur. The obverse of this coin depicts a legend which reads ‘Jaya Sri Gaura Simha Manipureshvarat Tenotapadani' within the line border. The reverse of this coin depicts a legend which reads ‘Veshaka Sudi terakhava de 1 Samvata 1678' within line border.
This Mohur is a rare variant of the extremely rare Mohur of Manipur. There are only two more know coins of this type in British Museum. This piece has some difference in reverse legend arrangement comparatively with other two coins, thus probably making this a unique specimen.
