Pobjoy Mint Violates Trademark on Coins
2017-07-20 Thu
On 18th July, the Pobjoy Mint was in a fix and had to get rid of the word BRITANNIA from the Proof 2017 .999 fine silver 1-ounce bullion coins that were issued for the Falkland Islands, due to a trademark infringement.7,329 coins have been already issued with the inscription creating a low mintage of this version. The remaining 42,671 coins will now be produced without the inscription. Pobjoy Mint officials stated that they were not aware that Britannia is trademarked on coins by the Royal Mint.
The image of Britannia will remain on the reverse, but the words BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES will be removed. The incorrect versions of the coin were sold on 13th July. After the announcement about the inscription change was made, online auction sellers started adjusting prices or stopped sales for the time being. Sales figures were not disclosed. The actual mintage of the second variant may or may not be accepted. The obverse featuring Queen Elizabeth II will not be changed.
