Crabeater Seal on New Blue Titanium Coin

2017-07-19 Wed

Pobjoy Mint released a new Blue Titanium Coin featuring two adult seals and a baby seal. The mother and its child are on the pack ice while the father goes out to hunt. Released for the British Antarctic Territory, the mintage limit of the Blue Titanium is 7,500 while that of the Uncirculated Cupro Nickel version is 10,000.

With every strike, Titanium reacts differently. Hence, each coin is different and has a unique colour. The lined effect on the coins is also unique to this metal. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Crabeater seal is found in the coast of Antarctica. It does not eat crabs ike the name would suggest. They eat Krill using their sieve like teeth and their adept hunting skills. Crabeater Seals are found in large numbers, approximately seven million.

Crabeaters move like snakes at a speed of 26kph on land for small distances. They can swim up to 12kmh, 60km in a day. They gather on ice in groups of 1,000 individuals and swim in the sea in groups of hundreds. 80 percent of the Crabeater pups are eaten by the Leopard seals. Inside water, they are attacked by killer whales.

The .990 Titanium coin weighs 10.00 g while the CuNi coin weighs 28.28 g. The coins come specially packaged along with a certificate of authenticity.
