Aurangzeb’s Gold Mohur Sold for INR 1, 35,000

Aurangzeb was the third son of Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal and the sixth Mughal Emperor of India. He was born in the year 1618 AD. He sat on the Mughal throne in the year 1658 AD and ruled it until his death 1707 AD. His reign lasted for almost half century.

When Aurangzeb came to the reign, he replaced the use of Kalima on the coin with couplets, as he did not want to defile the Kalima through its association with the monetary transactions of infidels. He also introduces ‘Julus’ formula on his coin which reads as ‘Julus Maimanat Manus’ with mint name and the year of his reign on the coin. There are two types of couplets with are found on his coins, ‘Mihir-e-Munir couplet’ and ‘Badr-e-Munir couplet’.

This very rare gold mohur minted in Islamabad weighs around 11g was sold for INR 1, 35,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Sikka Zad Dar Jahan Chu Mihr-e-Munir Badshah Aurangzeb Alamgir with AH 1079’ and the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Julus Maimanat Manus sanah 11 Zarb Islamabad.
