Experimentations for new compositions, denominations or designs were generally done using Pattern coins. Some of them were produced exclusively for collectors. Philadelphia Mint struck a large number of pattern coins in the 1870s, some of which are good looking while the others are mediocre. Heritage Auctions sold a few of these pattern coins at Long Beach Expo which took place from 8th to 11th June.

An 1872 Amazonian quarter dollar pattern in copper, Judd 1196, graded Proof 66 red and brown was sold for $70,500. A design, popularly known as Amazonian, created by William Barber was used on quarter dollar, half dollar and dollar denominations in 1872. Bare-breasted Liberty is in a sitting position with a sword in one hand and touching the head of an eagle with the other.

The reverse’s eagle design is highly sought after. This same design was used in a set of 1872 gold patterns featuring the Amazonian name. These pattern coins showcase a non-Amazonian obverse bust of Liberty with a unique cap and a ponytail.

It almost found its place in the collection of Egypt’s King Farouk, but it could not, since there was no plated catalogue for that collection.
