1909-O Indian Head Gold $5 Half Eagle Could Not Reach its Expected Mark

On 18th June, Clars Auction Gallery sold a 1909-O Indian Head gold $5 half eagle, graded MS 62, for $45,375 in Oakland, Calif. The bid did not reach its expected estimate value of $50,000 to $100,000.The coin had a mintage limit of 34,200 and was the final gold coin produced at the New Orleans Mint. It is also the only Indian Head half eagle produced at New Orleans. It is extremely rare in MS-62 and finer grades.
An 1876-CC Coronet gold $20 double eagle graded About Uncirculated 58 by NGC was sold for $6,000 against an estimate of $7,000 to $10,000. Gold double eagles struck at Carson City Mint are popular among collectors as they have connections with the Old West and mining history.
