The Sudan set of nine “50th Death Anniversary of Gen. Charles George “Chinese” Gordon” stamps, issued on 1st January 1935 have been in demand. General Gordon was a part of the British Army in the Crimean War. He led the Ever Victorious Army of the Emperor of China, due to which he was called “Chinese” Gordon.

In 1873 Gordon joined the Khedive of Egypt as the governor-general of Sudan. He worked dedicatedly to almost eliminate slave trade from Sudan. He resigned in 1880 and returned to Great Britain. Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed himself to be The Mahdi and led the tribes of Sudan in revolt against the Egyptian government.

Gordon was sent to evacuate the Europeans from Khartoum. He defended Khartoum to save Egyptians and Sudan tribes but was outnumbered by his opposition. The city soon fell apart and a British relief column arrived.
