Imaginary Euro Banknote Bridges Now Become Real

2017-07-05 Wed

The once-imaginary bridges that were featured on the euro notes can all be seen in reality since 2013. The notes were designed in 2002 featuring bridges that represent certain periods in European history. 5€, 10€, 20€, 50€, 100€, 200€, and 500€ banknotes portray Classical Antiquity, the Roman period, the Gothic period, the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo, iron and glass architecture, and lastly, contemporary 20th-century architecture.

Fictional images of bridges were used for the design since there are seven banknotes and 19 euro zone states. If the notes displayed real images of bridges, then it would be partial towards seven eurozone states while others would be left out.

Dutch designer Robin Stam had an interesting plan though. He thought of making them real. The bridges are now built around a new housing project called Het Land in Spijkenisse. All seven bridges look exactly similar to the designs that were used on the banknotes. The bridges were constructed by pouring dyed concrete into custom-made wooden moulds and cropping their edges. European Central Bank was impressed and approved the project.
