2017-07-04 Tue
When a white beam of light passes through a prism, it forms into a spectrum of exuberant VIBGYOR colours. This is how Indian traditions are; on a single platform, one can find different colours which together form a rainbow of united but diverse Indian traditions. One such traditional art form is puppetry which takes a single concept but is presented in different forms in Indian culture.India is said to be the home of puppet theatre. Almost all types of Puppets are found in India. Puppetry has held an important place in India throughout the ages in traditional entertainment. Themes of Puranic literature, local myth and legend are used in Indian puppetry.
India has various types of Puppets like String Puppets, Shadow Puppets, Rod Puppets and Glove Puppets. Many states like Rajasthan, Orissa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Maharashtra, Kerala, etc practice traditional puppetry for entertainment.
The above-shown image is a fine example of Puppetry tradition. The puppet shown in this stamp is that of Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay - a freedom fighter who also promoted traditional art and craft of India.
India post has issued this commemorative stampto promote the colours of Indian tradition in 1991.
