2016-06-30 Thu
Ira and Larry Goldberg sold an 1821 Coronet cent, graded MS-64 red and brown with a CAC sticker for $30,550 at the pre-Long Beach auction that took place between 4th and 7th June. The Newcomb 2 variety is an 1821 issue which is rare in grades above Extremely Fine. Proof examples are not as rare as Mint State examples. The same coin was offered in 1923 when it was termed as “Finest specimen known“. The coin has a lustrous mint red which fades to light steel brown and olive. 80% of the obverse is covered with fading mint colour. One-third of the reverse features a mint red toning.
This type of a coin is being offered at an auction after more than 100 years. It is the only Mint State red and brown example from the two varieties of 1821 Coronet cents that are certified by either PCGS or NGC.
