1794 Liberty Cap, Starred Reverse Cent Auctioned for $44,000

Ira and Larry Goldberg’s pre-Long Beach auction that was held from 4th to 7 June sold a 1794 Liberty Cap, Starred Reverse cent, graded S-48, Fine 12 for $44,063. The coin is one of the early highlights of the Philadelphia Mint productions. It has 94 small five-pointed stars between and sometimes under the dentils on the reverse. 75 such examples are known. Heritage sold one such example in 2006 for $34,500. It was sold once again in 2012 for $74,750. The coin has interesting olive-brown and steel colour along with lighter chocolate brown toning on the reverse. The coin also has some microscopic roughness and a speck of light green crud on the reverse. Almost all the small stars are visible.Latest News
