Highlights From the Lyn Knight Paper Money Auction

Lyn Knight auctioned a wide range of banknotes at the Kansas City International Paper Money Show on 8th June. Some rarities from Asia and the Middle East also exceeded their estimates. British Commonwealth category had colonial issues of other European powers.

1916 Zanzibar 10-rupee note, graded Very Fine 20 Net by PMG was sold for $21,000. It is one of the two existing notes of this kind. A $100 British Caribbean Territories banknote issued on 20th January 1963, graded VF-20 was sold for $20,000. An About Uncirculated 58 punch-cancelled uniface specimen Japanese 200-yen note from 1927 was sold for $15,000.

Two Extremely Fine Chinese 10,000-cash notes from 1855 had an estimated value of at $2,000 to $3,000 but were sold for a whopping $14,000 and $13,000 respectively. One of the most important types from Middle East, an undated Qatar and Dubai 25-riyal note from the 1960s, graded Currency VF-25 PPQ by PCGS was sold for $12,000.

A Colombian Banco de Barranquilla 10-peso note, issued on 12th June 1900, with a paddle-wheel steamer on the obverse, graded Very Fine+ was sold for $5,500. Highlights of the Philippine banknotes section were the ones that were issued during the American involvement from 1903 to World War II.
