2017-06-24 Sat

A three-coin program has been proposed to be released in 2019 to celebrate its 100th anniversary of American Legion that was founded in France on 15th March 1919. It was established by Members of the American Expeditionary Force occupying Europe after World War I for the welfare of their comrades and communities after they returned to their country. The Congress chartered it on 16th September 1919. Since then, it has become the biggest veterans service organisation in the United States.

Two legislation bills for this special coin programme are called The American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act. Proof and Uncirculated versions with a mintage limit of 50,000 $5 gold half eagles, 400,000 silver dollars and 750,000 copper-nickel clad half dollars are being proposed.

$35 surcharge would be added to each gold half eagle sold, $10 surcharge for each silver dollar and a $5 surcharge for each copper-nickel clad half dollar. These funds would be donated to the American Legion for the following activities:

Health care and disability benefits for those who have served the military.

Care of those who are still serving in the Armed Forces.

Patriotic values, morals, culture, and citizenship.

Strong families, assistance for at-risk children and for their healthy and wholesome development.

If everything works out well, then the coins will be out from 1st January 2019 to 31st December 2019.
