1976 Quarter Dollar Struck on a Cent Planchet to be Auctioned

2017-06-23 Fri

Heritage Auction will be offering a unique error coin at the Florida United Numismatists’ summer convention. The coin has an interesting combination of wrong planchet and a one-year design type. It is a 1776–1976-D Washington, Bicentennial quarter dollar struck on a cent planchet. It still has its Mint red colour which is why it is graded Mint State 67 red and brown.

Since these error coins were a one-year type, they are popular among collectors. The coins were released in September 1975 and were issued throughout 1976. When a planchet of one coin is mixed in with that for another one, a planchet error occurs. Bins or hoppers are used for moving planchets and coins on a Mint’s production floor. They could be used for different coins and planchets for a long time. The ones which are left-behind lead to wrong planchet errors.

The coin offered has the collar die at 11 o’clock. All of LIBERTY and almost all of QUARTER DOLLAR is outside the flan. The lustrous coin has a peach-gold, cherry-red, and cobalt-blue toning.
