Mozambique Releases New Banknotes

Banco de Mocambique started circulating a new series of metical banknotes featuring the signature of Governor Rogerio Zandamela on Friday. The new notes made of paper are of the denomination 1,000, 500 and 200 metical and the ones made of plastic are of the denomination 100, 50 and 20 metical. The polymer notes are the best for humid climates and are more durable. These notes come with the latest security features to tackle the rising problem of counterfeiting in the country.The new metical family or the Bank of Mozambique family was introduced in 2006, after which the notes were continuously updated. 16th June was when the latest notes were released. The date coincides with the 37th anniversary of metical that represents economic independence of Mozambique.
The older ones featuring the signature of former bank governors Adriano Maleiane and Ernesto Gove will be still in circulation.
