Erroneous Two-tailed Quarters
2017-06-15 Thu
Two examples of 1965 to 1966 Washington quarter dollar mules exist that were struck using two reverse dies, probably at San Francisco Mint. An MS-66 example was sold for $41,975 by Heritage Auctions in August 2006.One of the reverse sides is well-struck yet flat at the centres. It is a bit distorted in certain areas as well. The other reverse is generally struck once but the offered coin was struck for the second time by a blank planchet on top leading to swelling and distortion. This second reverse features an arc-shaped outline of the second planchet.
One of these error examples was found by the state of California in 2000 in an unknown safe-deposit box. All the pieces of this deposit were later sold by the state. This coin, certified by PCGS was sold by Weinberg by private treaty for $80,000 at the American Numismatic Association Convention in Atlanta in 2001. Nobody knows where that coin is now.
