Erroneous Two-Tailed Dime
2017-06-14 Wed
This Two-tailed dime, graded MS 64 was struck using a copper-nickel clad dime planchet with two Roosevelt dime reverse dies. Experts note that one reverse die features a Special Mint Set finish and the other has a normal circulation strike one. It also has strong clashed dies of Roosevelt’s head, rotated 15 degrees, which suggests that it was used earlier with a dime obverse die.The coin was probably made secretly at San Francisco Mint. An attempt was made to use their pairing in the same coinage press. The dime was mint in 1973. There is a chance that they were struck in 1965 or 1966 as two-tailed Washington quarters belonged to that era. Some experts state that this two-tailed dime and the two two-tailed quarters were made at the same time for some obscure reasons.
