Ujjain was an urban center during the time when Avanti was a Mahajanapad. Ujjain flourished as a very important trade center because of its mild climate and fertile land, connecting various other trade routes.

The Local coins of Ujjain probably started around 200 BC. The die struck copper coins are of various types.

The motifs depicted on coins are influenced by religious symbols. These symbols played a very important role in the cultural and social life of the Ujjain people. The most mesmerizing are the human figures on the coins which are believed to be an image of Lord Shiva. Other symbols include bull, horse, elephant, lion, tortoise, tree, etc. We also we see few inscribed copper coins of Ujjain. The coins are found in round and square shape.
