India is known for its rich culture throughout the world. Here each and every community has its own identity and way of living including than food, clothing, religion… We see Indians wearing different headgears!Wearing a headgear completes the attire and also adds a pride to it. Indian headgears have various purposes like religious, social convention, decoration, protection, medical purpose, etc.
There are several styles, which are specific to the wearer's region or religion, and they vary in shape, size, and colour.
We can also distinguish a person by his headgear. For example, a turban worn by Punjabi, known as Pagri, is an identity of being a Punjabi. The pagri is a symbol of honour and respect everywhere it is worn. It is a common practice to honour important guests by offering them one to wear. The bright red in Leheriya pattern Pagris (Safa) are worn by the people of Marwar.
Indian Kings always wore a headgear decorated with various gems, beads, and other accessories. The Indian groom is also seen wearing a turban when he is getting married.
Headgear is an important part of our costume!
India Post has issued 16 stamps on Indian Headgears of different parts of the country to celebrate the invaluable role played by the turbans, caps, and hats in the society. As it is looked upon as an object of identity and worn with great honour and pride. Each stamp is having the face value of INR 10.
