Versailles Peace Congress Remembered on 1919 Cancellation
2017-02-09 Thu
The Versailles Peace Congress was a treaty when delegates from 27 different nations met after World War I. The treaties that were imposed on the losing side made of Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire were forced by France, Britain, Italy, and the United States. Japan was the fifth major power of World War I and became trustees of old German colonies in the Pacific Ocean. They were not very strong among the Atlantic allies. The Versailles Treaty was signed on 28th June 1919 and Germany was held responsible for the war. The country was imposed with huge reparations costs on the defeated foe. Experts believe that the Nazi Party became more powerful after the treaty was signed as the event led to hyperinflation and depression in Germany. The congress’s League of Nations could not maintain peace because the isolationist politicians stopped the United States from becoming a member.
This commemorative cancellation cover reminds us that countries which emerge victorious in wars should be generous and other world powers should always support global diplomacy to avoid more violence.
