Dr. Bhagwan Das

An Indian theosophist and social activist, Dr. Bhagwan Das was born on 12th January 1869 in Varanasi, India. He not only served in the Central Legislative Assembly of British India but was also active in opposing the riots with the help of Hindustani Culture Society. He worked as an advocate for the British rule.During Non-cooperation movement he joined the Indian National Congress. He along with Annie Besant established the Central Hindu College (now Benaras Hindu University). He also founded Kashi Vidya Peeth and served as its headmaster.
He has written over 30 books and received the Bharat Ratna in 1955. He died on 18th September 1958; a road in New Delhi and a colony in Varanasi are named after him.
India Post issued this 20 Paisa commemorative stamp of Dr. Bhagwan das on 12th January, 1969.
