1956 Cortina Winter Olympics Medal to be Auctioned

51 gilt silver winner's medals were awarded during the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy. The city was selected as the venue for 1944 Games which were cancelled because of World War II. From 12th to 19th January, RR Auction will be offering Summer and Winter Olympics winners’ medals, participation medals, Olympic torches and related items. The medal winner and the sport for which the medal was won, will be disclosed only to the final bidder.

The auction will be offering a 60-millimeter gilt .800 fine silver medal that was awarded to first-place finishers at the 1956 Winter Olympics.

The obverse features a head of Victory, Olympic rings, a torch and the inscription VII GIOCHI OLIMPICI INVERNALI. The reverse features an ice crystal over Mt. Pomagagnon and the inscription CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS. The medal was designed by Italian medallist Constantino Affer from Milan and struck by Lorioli Bros. It has an estimated value of $10,000+.
