Representation of a fight between a lion and an elephant is termed GajaSardula in literature. Hence, the coin that depicts this representation is rightly described as GajaSardula type Coin. The Kalachuri Empire was the name used by two kingdoms that had a succession of dynasties from 6th – 7th Centuries to 10th-12th centuries. One ruling over areas in Central India and the other ruled from Karnataka and some parts of Deccan. Both the families are well known for the exceptional coins they issued during their times.
One such exceptional coin is GajaSardula Type coin. Adopted by Prithvideva I, Jallaldeva I and Prithvideva II, this type depicts a Lion attacking an elephant. This Particular coin was issued during the reign of JallalDeva.
The execution of the Coin is distinctive. The lion and the elephant are shown on obverse whereas, on the reverse, name of the ruling king is inscribed in Devanagari. The curve of the tail of the lion as well as the raised trunk of the elephant reflects the contemporary artisanship.
The ferociousness and valour of the lion over a helpless elephant are linked with the strength and the might of the dynasty.
