100 Years of Electrification in Indian Railways

2026-02-27 Fri

India's railways have served as the backbone of the nation's growth, providing vital connections for people across vast distances. The first railway line in India operated between Mumbai and Thane, covering a distance of 34 kilometres. The inaugural passenger train journey took place on April 16, 1853.

The first separate railway budget was presented in 1924. In the same period, on February 3, 1925, India's first electric passenger train began running between Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, CSMT) and Kurla (on the Harbour Branch line).

The Government of India issued a miniature sheet and a first-day cover commemorating 100 Years of Electrification in Indian Railways on December 31, 2025.

A Rs 100 commemorative coin was also issued on January 9, 2026, to mark 100 Years of Electrification in Indian Railways.
