Kunch was originally part of Datia until Mulhar Rao Holkar claimed it. From 1793 to 1797, Datia was under the control of the Sindhia family. After that, Ambaji Inglia took possession of Kunch. In 1805, following the Second Maratha War, Jaswant Rao Holkar lost a significant portion of his territories and renounced all claims to the district of Kunch in Bundelkhand. Kunch was then granted as a jagir to the daughter of Bhima Bai Holkar.
The administration of the area was left to the collectors of Bundelkhand, while the revenue was paid to the Holkar family.
The Maratha Confederacy issued silver coins in the rupee, half rupee, and copper paisa denominations, with the mint name Kunch Hejri. These coins were minted in the name of Shah Alam II from 1780 to 1805. The distinguishing Maratha mint marks are flower, sword, Trishul, and Jhar in various styles and combinations.
Later, the administration was taken over by the East India Company.
