The Patharughat Peasant Uprising is a significant chapter in India's freedom movement. This revolt, one of the major uprisings against British rule in Assam, took place in 1894.In 1826, the British government imposed heavy taxes on farmers after annexing Assam. The farmers resented these taxes because they were used to paying in kind or through services rather than in cash.
On January 28, 1894, British police opened fire on a gathering of peasants, killing approximately 140 people. This tragic event became known as the Battle of Patharughat or Patharughatar Ran.
To commemorate the Peasant Uprising of Patharughat-1894, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp on January 1, 2025.
